Во времена Александра Грибоедова в 1825 году комедию удалось опубликовать лишь отрывочно, только из I и III актов, с большими цензурными купюрами. Высмеивание ханжества и лицемерия, видимо, показалось слишком свободолюбивым чиновникам и цензорам тех времен. Но несмотря на это пьеса стала очень популярной и широко расходилась в списках – около 40 тысяч рукописных экземпляров. Издана полностью комедия была только спустя практически 40 лет после создания.
